Our fireplace & mantle in its former life with the previous owner with yellow walls & trim.
For some reason, deciding what to do on our beautiful fireplace mantle was a seriously difficult decision. It’s an area I didn’t think much of back when it was painted yellow, but the white trim & grey paint really made the beauty of the black and white marble stand out. It took me forever to figure out which of our few large-scale art pieces should go over the fireplace – or maybe a pair? Everything seemed so dark in a room that was so bright and cheery. Finally, a mirror I had overlooked since it had always been in our bedroom caught my eye in a stack of displaced art.
The mirror is an old DIY. It was a mirror in a horrible frame on clearance at Ross that I re-framed in a clearance Hobby Lobby frame that I stained black. It was originally made to coordinate with our dark bedroom furniture a few houses ago (I’m planning to post photos of that house soon).
For a while, that was all that was there. I had to really live with the mantle and soak it in before I could decide what to do with it. Then I saw photos of layered photo frames and loved the casual look. With some new meta-looking frames, our new family photos (by Kerry, www.cherish-photos.com) fit in beautifully. The larger frame is from Aaron Brothers & the smaller one is from Hobby Lobby. Both were bought on sale or with a coupon – always take advantage of sales and coupons at these stores.
After that, things started falling into place. I put some silver candle sticks in some teal antique reproduction candle sticks I randomly bought from D Lawless Hardware years ago (use coupon code “remodelicous” for 10% off). When I went to Garden Ridge to pick up some candle sticks with Cora in tow, we stopped to look at the animal sculptures since she is currently obsessed with all things animal. We found a white ceramic goldfish that remedied me of the ceramic beta fish from Z Gallerie I had put on my Christmas wish list for Jason years ago, but never received. The goldfish was half the price and sits better on the fireplace (note, I’ve since also seen these at Home Goods). The “K” initial from Urban Outfitters is something we had on our mantle at the last house.
I LOVE the way it all came together. I just wish we had a mantle clock to balance the other side and I’m working on that idea.
